I have this adorable granddaughter who loves grilled cheese sandwiches. She has them for breakfast. Every time I visit her I try to conjure up a new grilled cheese for her to try out. This one put a big smile on her face! It is made with artisan whole grain bread, raclette cheese, and toasted prosciutto. This sandwich is a perfect blend of flavors. The nutty and earthy flavor of whole grain bread complements the rich, creamy, and slightly smoky flavor of raclette cheese. The toasted prosciutto compliments the artisan bread by adding a crisp salty texture. Serve with a salad or a side of fruit. Let me know how you like it!
Tips For an Evenly Well-Toasted Grilled Cheese.
- Put sufficient butter in every crevice of the bread -even the edges. Butter is your friend when making a crisp golden grilled cheese.
- Cook with medium heat in a heavy cast iron skillet that is properly heated. To heat the cast iron pan properly, heat slowly on medium heat for at least five minutes. Your pan is ready when hot water droplets put in the pan sizzle in little balls.
- Flip the grilled cheese over from time to time so that it browns evenly until you get the desired golden brown crust.
Prosciutto And Raclette Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Equipment
- 1 heavy skillet, do not use a non-stick pan
- 1 metal spatula
- 1 saute pan
- 1 small bowl
Ingredients
- 8 slices multigrain artisan bread
- ½ lb very thin sliced prosciutto, roughly chopped
- 1 stick room temperature butter
- 8 slices Raclette Cheese (Substitute:Havarti, MonterreyJack, Swiss)
Instructions
- Heat saute pan on stove top at medium heat
- Roughly chop proscuitto
- Saute prosciutto until crisp. Remove from pan and set aside.
- Lay out the slices of bread and butter one side of each slice. Spread evenly throughout the entire slice.
- add one slice of cheese to the unbuttered side of four slices of bread.
- Sprinkle toasted prosciutto on the cheese( to taste)and top it with the second slice of cheese, sandwiching the prosciutto.
- Top the sandwich with another slice of bread with the buttered side facing up
- Heat skillet at medium-low temperature until hot. The heat level depends on your stovetop and skillet. A heavy skillet is recommended. When the skillet is too hot, the buttered bread will burn.
- Place the sandwiches on the heated skillet
- When bread is a medium golden brown flip the sandwich with a metal spatula to the other side until golden brown.
- when done, put sandwiches on a baking rack to keep them crisp. Sandwiches are best when eaten hot.
